ANNLAUG BORSHEIM & RANNVEIG DJONNE – Toras Dans

Well, what do you know an album of which I can’t understand a word lyrically…or, more importantly need to. OK, so if this was being reviewed by say the BBC’s Culture Show the presenters would turn the album into some superior art form but from a layman’s point of view who knows nothing of the Norwegian language (although I must concede to having spent a month performing at The Scotsman Pub, Oslo…and survived…just!) I must confess to having been totally seduced by this awesome duo. On her previous album ‘November’ Annlaug (hardanger fiddle, guitar & vocal) mesmerised the listener with her… read more - http://folking.org/annlaug-borsheim-rannveig-djonne-toras-dans/

New John Reischman Bluegrass Mandolin Album

Walk Along John is John Reischman’s first solo instrumental album in thirteen years, and it’s a triumphant return to form. It’s also a celebration of his seminal influence in the world of bluegrass and “new acoustic music,” a movement he contributed to with Tony Rice in the 1980s. A new generation of musicians has now grown up playing his tunes at jams and obsessing over his recordings. Chris Thile of The Punch Brothers joins John on the opening tune “Itzbin Reel,” an early composition of John’s that Chris has been playing since the age of 8. Eli West, from Cahalen Morrison & Eli West, listened endlessly to John’s recordings while studying in college and guests on the album as well. Other next generation star players on the album include… read more - http://folking.org/new-john-reischman-bluegrass-mandolin-album/

The Levellers release charity single for War Child

Brighton folk-rockers Levellers released a five track anti-war EP in May featuring a new recording, with special guests, of ‘The Recruiting Sergeant’. The original version, which is an anti-war song, features on their 10th studio album ‘Static on the Airwaves’ which was released to critical acclaim in 2012.

The new recording of ‘The Recruiting Sergeant’ features traditional English folk singers The Copper Family, plus Shona Kipling and Dan Walsh.

The EP also has 3 other anti-war Levellers tracks – ‘Another Man’s Cause’, ‘Not In My Name’ and ‘Barrel of The Gun’ plus the original album version of Recruiting Sergeant. All profits from the release of the War Child version of The Recruiting Sergeant will be donated to War Child, the charity for children affected by war and set up to protect children living in the world’s most dangerous war zones… read more - http://folking.org/the-levellers-release-charity-single-for-war-child/

The Comeback Album : Eric Brace & Peter Cooper

The Comeback Album is the third offering from these Nashville musicians/band leader/producer/journalist/songwriters! The comeback just refers to a revisiting the studios to make an album after a couple of years touring in the US and Europe, and working on exciting projects like recording the children’s songs of Tom T. Hall with an interstellar cast of musicians! Maybe it’s a bit wild to call Eric and Peter country music’s answer to Simon and Garfunkel but their voices and talents have a distinctive chemistry that combine so well and this The Comeback Album is another testament to that… read more - http://folking.org/the-comeback-album-eric-brace-peter-cooper/

Gren Bartley – Winter Fires

Another beautifully crafted album from West Country festival favourite Gren Bartley.

Based on the loose theme of Winter fires – physical and emotional landscapes before the Spring thaw, and the flames which keep us going.

The style of this album is relaxed bluegrass with a touch of country. Gren’s voice is gentle and emotive, his lyrics are subtle and poetical, For me, Gren seems at his best in his portrayals of human character and emotion. The title track is… read more - http://folking.org/gren-bartley-winter-fires/

FAUSTUS – Broken Down Gentlemen

My mum had a turn of phrase for the opening track of the latest Faustus album and that was ‘rumpy-pumpy’. Although some may see this as disparaging I do know what she meant (she even wondered why I liked ‘folk’ music at all) but ever since I first heard the original Albion Band I’ve been sold on this quintessentially ‘English’ approach to our genre of music. The opening track “Broken Down Gentlemen” is the kind of song that responds well to the squeezebox/fiddle led introduction which punctuates the lyrics sung (presumably) by… read more - http://folking.org/faustus-broken-down-gentlemen/

Jimmy Brewer – AS TIME STANDS STILL

Jimmy Brewer is a singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist and not your typical acoustic troubadour. Jimmy Brewer has the power to silence a room with little more than an intro. He captures an audience and takes them on an emotional rollercoaster ride, leaving them exhausted, amazed and fulfilled. Fresh from being one of the chosen artists to represent their home town on the 2012 Joan Armatrading UK tour where he performed to a packed house at Northampton’s Derngate Theatre, Jimmy Brewer will now release his debut album entitled AS TIME STANDS STILL… read more - http://folking.org/jimmy-brewer-as-time-stands-still/

UK debut album by AlascA

On their debut UK release ACTORS & LIARS, AlascA play eleven tales and songs that have the tendency of lodging themselves in the old grey matter. AlascA’s music has a novel and poetic quality, which to me anyway, will leave a lasting impression.

The tales grow on you and the melodies that guide the lyrics to their end have a place in the past, the present and the future. Their lingering melodies will appeal to the listeners of current indie-folk, but will likewise inspire those who loved the folk sounds, close harmonies and lyrical subtleties of the ‘60’s and ‘70’s… read more - http://folking.org/uk-debut-album-by-alasca/

“It’s been a very intense time – I released my first record while touring with the Jennys, then hit the road with my own band, and haven’t really stopped. I’ve touched down briefly here and there, and during those times I was able to write and conceptualize the record, but I’ve mostly been on the go” says Moody of the time between her first solo album The Garden and creating These Wilder Things her new album due for release on June 10 on True North Records… read more - http://folking.org/ruth-moody-announces-irish-uk-dates-for-may-june-july-new-album-these-wilder-things-out-june-10/

Gjallarhorn’s Suvetar is my cinematic backdrop to Welcoming in the May and I felt the need to share it again with you.
