2010 BBC Young Folk Awards Winner James Findlay at Green Note, London Monday 18th June
James Findlay walked away with the BBC Radio 2 Young Folk Award title on Friday 4th December 2009. Amongst a stunning group of finalists James’ amazing voice and distinctive guitar and fiddle style stood out. He is influenced by all genres of music, but his love lies in traditional English folk music and ballads and in a short space of time he has developed a stage presence all of his own.
As well as the Young Folk Award James was a winner in the ‘New Roots’ national competition for up-and-coming folk performers in 2008. Judging the Young Folk Awards Bellowhead’s Jon Boden exclaimed, “Bloody hell, what a voice!’ was my first thought as he launched into his two songs. He’s warmly charismatic with that sparkle of personality that draws a crowd along with him.” (Paul Adams, 2011) 2011 saw James’ debut album ‘Sport and Play’ released under the major folk label ‘Fellside’.

KEVIN DEMPSEY & ROSIE CARSON TOURING, MAY , JUNE AND AUGUST
Separated by a generation and the Atlantic Ocean, Kevin Dempsey from Coventry in the heart of England, and Rosie Carson from Cincinnati, USA, may seem to some, an unusual pairing. But really it’s no coincidence at all. Rosie’s dad, Steve Carson and Kevin have been friends since the early eighties, having met in England during the formation of folk super-group ‘Whippersnapper’.
Now Rosie and Kevin are building on the success of past US & European tours and two successful album releases in 2010 and 2011.
Their recent album, ‘Between The Distance’ released, August 2011, has received excellent press reviews & plays on national radio.
“Rosie’s voice is mature and appealing and contributes to some delightful combined harmonies. Her fiddle playing is light but firm with that slightly sketchy and edgy quality so essential to the English folk ‘feel’. Kevin’s chordings are, as ever, fascinating and his playing is bright and accurate, chunky and funky, somehow combining the jagged and the neat, with his own compelling rhythmic and percussive character.” Kevin Ward
“The tracks here are mostly from the tradition, yet all are imbued with that unique, slightly hazy timelessness that is so familiar from Dempsey’s back catalogue, whilst Carson’s fiddle belies her years & demonstrates why she has already picked up a number of awards.” Oz Hardwick R2 Magazine August 2011
Kevin & Rosie are recording a new, third album, which will be available later in the year.

KATHRYN TICKELL PRESENTS NORTHUMBRIAN VOICES,
AN EVENING OF LIVE MUSIC, STORIES AND SONGS AT LSO ST LUKE’S
Leading composer and performer Kathryn Tickell brings together traditional music and historic narratives in an evening of live music, stories and songs at LSO St Luke’s on 12 June at 8pm, part of the UBS Soundscapes: Eclectica series. Northumbrian Voices is directed by Annie Rigby of the award-winning theatre company, Unfolding Theatre
Northumbrian Voices is based on interviews and recordings Kathryn has made over the years with family members and old shepherd musicians from whom she learnt tunes and songs, including mouth organ player Will Atkinson and fiddler Willie Taylor. Three generations of musicians perform in this reflection of immensely strong communities, their music and collective stories.
Kathryn Tickell comments: “It’s not just a nostalgic look back to the past though. Many of the people whose words we are using are still alive and very much of the modern age: my neighbour, my cousin – both Northumbrian farmers. I always wish that audiences could meet some of the people I learnt from – they were such characters – and this show feels as if we are letting those people speak.”
Kathryn’s work is deeply rooted in the landscape and people of Northumbria. She has released 14 albums and has recorded and performed with Sting, The Chieftains, The Penguin Café Orchestra, Evelyn Glennie, Andy Sheppard and many others. In 2009 Kathryn was awarded the Queen’s Medal for Music for an exceptional contribution to British music. This past year she has collaborated with pianist and composer Joanna MacGregor, curated an evening for the 2011 BBC Proms, and continued working with Sting, as well as touring with the Kathryn Tickell Band. Kathryn is the Artistic Director of Folkworks, and founder and Director of Folkestra, the North East’s dynamic young folk ensemble.
